Razor wire concertina is a high-security fencing component designed to
deter even determined intruders with its razor-sharp blades. Unlike standard
barbed wire, it consists of a coiled spiral of steel strips with serrated edges,
resembling a concertina fold. Each coil is densely packed with blades that
lacerate skin on contact, making climbing or cutting extremely painful and
difficult. Commonly installed atop prison walls, military bases, or critical
infrastructure, it serves as a last line of defense against breaches.
The construction of razor wire concertina involves interlocking multiple
coils to form a continuous barrier. Each coil is 12–24 inches in diameter, with
blades protruding 1–2 inches. Galvanized or stainless steel options resist rust,
while electrified variants add an electric shock deterrent. Installation
requires mounting brackets on fences or walls, with tension springs keeping the
coils taut. For enhanced security, multiple layers of concertina can be stacked,
creating a “knife wall” effect that is nearly impossible to scale.
While highly effective, razor wire concertina raises ethical and legal
concerns due to its potential for severe injury. Its use is regulated by laws
restricting deployment in public areas or residential zones. In permitted
contexts, warning signs are mandatory to alert passersby. Military and
correctional facilities prioritize its psychological deterrent effect, knowing
few would attempt to breach such a barrier. By combining lethal design with
strategic placement, razor wire concertina remains a symbol of maximum perimeter
security.
